Technology is a wonderful thing but the advances in technology can sometimes lead to problems being made. It has to be said that computers and smartphone technology have made our lives an awful lot easier in many ways, but they have also brought about challenges and difficulties that many of us would never have imagined. This has been the case for a number of frauds that have taken place around the United Kingdom and it is something that people need to be aware of.
One case that has been brought to light recently revolves around a couple from Rugby, Hilary and Colin Brocklehurst. The couple allowed a bogus caller to gain remote access to their computer. If you have never seen this in action before, you may be surprised to learn how easy it is for an IT expert or professional to work around your computer making changes and improvements while being sat very far from your computer. This is usually a good thing, the benefits of remote access means that people can get the help they need when they need it, but of course, as with so many things in life, this benefit and improvement has been used by fraudsters to commit crimes.
Someone will always be willing to commit fraud
No matter what opportunity is able to make life better, you will find that there is someone willing to use this benefit and use it for their own means. This was the case with the fraudster who tried to con the couple out of a £250 bank transfer. Thankfully the couple realised what was happening before the transfer took place, and they managed to inform the police, but in some regards, they were lucky. If they hadn’t realised so quickly, it is very likely that they would have been conned out of their money.
It turns out that a number of people in their local area were being targeted with this style of crime and someone in Leaming ton had been a victim of this style of crime the week before. The fact that so many people in the wider Rugby area were being targeted in this manner led the police to make a statement about the situation. In many cases, it is best not to highlight these crimes because it will sometimes give new ideas to potential fraudsters and criminals. However, when so many people are being targeted, it is best to make people aware of the potential crime so that they can be on guard about this sort of story.
Don’t assume people are who they say they are
The couple had taken a call from someone who claimed to be from Talk Talk, who provide phone and internet services for the family. This was the same approach taken in all of the scams which sadly led to one man who suffered a loss. He was informed that he was entitled to compensation due to problems that his computer was experiencing and this encouraged the man to hand over his bank details, which allowed the fraudsters to take some cash.
The fact that people seem to promise something of benefit is sometimes enough to catch people out. While you don’t want to be cynical about everything in life, there is a need to not take everything at face value. When you take on board that many people will be uncertain when it comes to computers, there is a great deal to be said for taking things with a pinch of salt and looking into what is on offer. You will find that major companies will not look for bank details in this manner, and they certainly won’t be looking to take remote access of your computer in the vast majority of cases.
The fact that the elderly appeared to have been targeted makes this a particularly difficult and nasty case, which means that many people will be looking for the accused to be severely punished if they are found guilty. This, plus the fact that the case revolves around modern technology which not everyone will be comfortable with, means that there is a need for an experienced and competent defence solicitor to represent the accused. There is no getting away from the fact that this style of crime is a cruel one, and it is why there will not be much sympathy for anyone found guilty of this type of crime. This is why the solicitors involved need to make sure that they can represent a client in the most effective manner.
